Past and present

This research cluster aims to foster understanding of the human past and how that past is active in the contemporary world. Open to all staff and student researchers, we encourage dialogue on:

Past as past: understanding the deep history of humanity through archaeological, historical and palaeoenvironmental research around the world.

Past as present: investigating the past as an active part of the contemporary world, in contemporary cultural, social and political domains, from cultural heritage to museum practice, cultural renewal and wellbeing.

Past as future: investigating how the archives of the past can be deployed to help navigate the perils of the Anthropocene. This is a major focus for cluster activity via the UQ Anthropocene Project and is the subject of an exhibition at the UQ Anthropology Museum in 2023.
