Archaeology Education Program

Archaeology for Schools

Catering to all year levels, we are passionate about sharing the world of archaeology with young minds, offering several in-reach and outreach opportunities tailored to the needs of the school. Sessions are designed to consider the needs of the age group and subject they are learning and are delivered either on campus in our state-of-the-art facilities, or within the school classroom.

What is Archaeology?

Archaeology studies the evolution and cultural history of humanity through the analysis of the physical evidence of past societies, including ancient landscapes, buildings, artefacts, and the individuals themselves. Archaeology draws from subjects within the humanities, sciences and social sciences to understand past cultures and both interpret and conserve them in the modern world, being one of the major areas of employment in the heritage profession.

At The University of Queensland, our archaeology programme sits across a variety of STEAM disciplines and offers archaeology and archaeological science opportunities. As such, we are pleased to offer a tailored program to suit almost any subject.

Our department is equipped with specialist knowledge in the areas of:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander archaeology,
  • Zooarchaeology
  • Archaeobotany
  • Historical archaeology,
  • Lithic technologies,
  • Bioarchaeology,
  • Osteology and palaeopathology
  • Pacific archaeology
  • Cultural heritage, and more.

Programs

As this is a new initiative, programs are in the final stages of development to ensure up-to-date alignment to the curriculum. Please reach out to discuss your needs and we will be happy to work with you to best suit your classroom needs.

An example of prior education resources and programs developed by our team can be found here.

Delivery

In-reach

Tailored sessions held in the fully equipped UQ Archaeological Science Laboratory, or the Archaeology Teaching and Research Centre (ATARC), our outdoor purpose-built facility.

Outreach

We come to you. Sessions vary and can incorporate practical hands-on lessons, or lecture style talks. We aim to be accessible far and wide. Please reach out to discuss delivering outreach opportunities not just in SEQ, but in rural, regional and remote areas.

Sessions are held in 1-hour blocks unless otherwise discussed, with flexibility to have longer or shorter sessions.

Cost

As we are in the pilot stage of this program, we aim to keep the program low-to-no-cost to the student.
