The School of Social Science and The University of Queensland offer scholarships and award prizes to help students fund their tertiary education. Scholarships and Prizes are made possible with the generous support of our donors, external agencies and industry providers.

Everick Foundation Scholarship for Indigenous Heritage
This Scholarship was established by the School of Social Science through the support of the Everick Foundation to provide opportunities for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students to pursue academic and professional careers in archaeology and cultural heritage, to ultimately achieve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led positive cultural heritage outcomes.
Eligibility
You are eligible to apply if you:
- identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander;
- are enrolled full-time or part-time in a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science or dual Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science (including Honours) with a declared major in Archaeology or Archaeological Science or other major relevant to cultural heritage.

Honours
The Donald Tugby Anthropology Prize
The Donald Tugby Anthropology Prize was established in 2010 and maintained by the income of an endowment gift of $23,000 from Dr Donald Tugby, who taught Anthropology at The University of Queensland from 1958 to 1986 and carried out extensive fieldwork in Southeast Asia. The prize is valued at minimum $1,000.
Eligibility
This prize will be awarded to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) student who -
- is studying in the field of Anthropology;
- has submitted a thesis on a topic related to the Asia or Pacific region (excluding Australia), or on anthropological method; and
- achieves the highest overall mark for the honours program.
The John Western Sociology Prize
The John Western Sociology Prize was established in 1996 to honour the late Emeritus Professor John Western’s contribution to Sociology. The prize consists of $1,000 and is maintained by the income of an endowment from Mrs Tasnee Western with a contribution by the School of Social Science.
Eligibility
- Approval from the Head of School, School of Social Science;
- completing a fourth year honours degree in the School of Social Science in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Sociology; or the Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) program. In the case of Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) students, all honours fourth-year courses and the thesis must be undertaken in the School of Social Science; and
- achieves the highest fourth-year result in the Sociology Honours program.
The School of Social Science Honours Prize
The School of Social Science Honours Prize was established in 2023 and maintained by annual income from the School of Social Science. The prize is valued at $1,000.
Eligibility
- Approval from the Head of School, School of Social Science;
- completing any honours program owned by the School of Social Science; and
- highest overall percentage in the School of Social Science Honours Program for students submitting their thesis and completing all coursework by the official submission date (21 October 2024).
Postgraduate & HDR
The Madeleine Taylor Scholarship
The purpose of the Madeleine Taylor scholarship is to support a Higher Degree by Research candidate or postgraduate student to undertake research activities in women‘s studies in the areas of Sociology or Anthropology. The scholarship is a research grant of a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $2,250.

The Donald Tugby Postgraduate Archaeological Research Prize
The Donald Tugby Postgraduate Archaeological Research Prize was established in 2010 and maintained by the income of an endowment gift of $23,000 from Dr Donald Tugby, who taught Anthropology at The University of Queensland from 1958 to 1986. Dr Tugby introduced statistics to Archaeology and initiated extensive archaeological fieldwork on North Stradbroke Island. The prize is to encourage and reward research excellence in Archaeology by facilitating postgraduate student participation in the global archaeological research community.
