The School of Social Science Postgraduate Conference is an annual event showcasing the work of our postgraduate students and creating opportunities for discussion, debate, and exchange across the four cognate disciplines of our school: Archaeology, Anthropology, Sociology, and Criminology. As a forum of critical engagement, a room for in-depth scholarly communications, and most importantly, a space where we celebrate our HDR students and foster personal care and connections with each other in the social science community with solidarity, the conference welcome engagement from all social science students (broadly defined – undergraduate, honours, postgraduate coursework, and HDR). We also welcome students, researchers, and professionals from other schools and institutions to participate in this conference by:

  1. Submitting Free-form abstracts that respond to the conference theme (text, video, programme for live performance, collaborative project proposals – surprise us!) and present/perform your work in 10 minutes (15 minutes for collaborative projects);
  2. Submitting a piece of Original Artwork (accompanied by a maximum of 100 words of text) to be included in the Conference Artwork Exhibition: Art-ing Social Science;
  3. Join us at the UQ Art Museum – our partner for this conference – to enjoy a mediated visit of their upcoming exhibition: We are Electric;
  4. Follow the official conference twitter account @UQSocialScience, and engage with our posts to keep up with the conference;
  5. Share this call for contribution with your peers and colleagues, and encourage them to engage in this unpredictable and surprising gathering!

2023 Conference Theme – Experimenting Social Science: Research-Creation in the Becoming…

We hope this conference could afford social science students (broadly defined) an inviting and inclusive space with room for creativity. Therefore, we have carefully drafted a Call for Contributions (download through this online link) and purposively ask you to reflect upon it, and address the conference theme. Think broadly, and tell us: how you have been experimental in your specific social science research thinking and doings, in your PhD career, in teaching and learning, and in your everyday knowledge production processes? All submissions should be directed to zhaoxi.zheng@uq.edu.au and please specify specific requirement/s (e.g., audio-visual) for your presentation/performance.

About Postgraduate Conference

The School of Social Science Postgraduate Conference is typically held annually.

Organised and run by Higher Degree by Research (PhD and MPhil) students, the aim of the Conference is to showcase the work of our postgraduate students and create opportunities for discussion, debate and exchange across the four cognate disciplines of our school.

The Conference is also an important forum for Honours students considering further Higher Degree by Research studies to display their recent work in poster form and hear about what postgraduate students are currently researching within the School.
