Advice for students undertaking a Sociology Major
Advice for BA students undertaking majors in both Sociology and Criminology
Students undertaking a Bachelor of Arts majoring in both Criminology and Sociology should note that from 2017, the three research methods courses are compulsory for both majors. These courses are:
SOCY2019 - Introduction to social research
SOCY2339 - Introducing Quantitative Research
SOCY3329 - Qualitative Social Research
As a course can only count toward one major within the program, you must decide which major (out of Criminology or Sociology) that each course will count towards. You can elect to have all three courses count toward one major, or a combination toward both majors. Please note that you will also need to take 6 units of advanced (level 2 or higher) sociology and/or criminology electives to make up the unit shortfall. For example:
Sociology major | Criminology major | |
SOCY2339 and 4 units of advanced SOCY electives |
SOCY2019 SOCY3329 and 2 units of advanced CRIM electives |
|

SOCY2019 SOCY2339 SOCY3329 |

Please note - this process is not automatic and affected students should contact the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences for program planning advice.
Example plan
Emily started her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2017, opting to undertake single majors in both Criminology and Sociology. After consulting with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and deciding to count all three methods courses toward her major in sociology, her plan for enrolment in each of the majors is as follows:
Single major in Sociology Introductory course (2 units required) Cornerstone course (2 units required) Research Methods (6 units required) Advanced courses (2 units required) Compulsory capstone course (2 units required) |
Single major in Criminology Cornerstone course (2 units required) Advanced courses taking the place of 6 units of research methods Advanced courses (2 units required) Compulsory capstone course (2 units required)
|
Plan for dual degree students (BArts / BSocSc)
Students undertaking a Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Social Science dual degree should note that both introductory methods courses are compulsory for the BSocSc as well as the single and extended major plans for both Criminology and Sociology in the BA. These courses are:
SOCY2339 - Introducing Quantitative Research
SOCY2049 - Introducing Qualitative Research
As a course can only count toward one major or section of a degree program, the introductory methods courses will be used for the BSocSc component of the dual degree, and #4 units of advanced electives can be selected from the plan for the appropriate major in the BA. Please note - this process is not automatic and must go through the Faculty of Arts for approval. Students affected should contact the School of Social Science in the first instance.
