Public Symposium: Extraction, Development & Indigenous Community Sustainability

Fri 11 May 2018 9:00am5:30pm

Venue

Global Change Institute (Building 20), The University of Queensland, St Lucia campus

Legislation recognising Indigenous peoples’ rights to consultation prior to development impacts such as mining projects, forestry projects or other forms of extraction have brought enormous pressure and potential threats, as well as opportunities, for communities in Australia and Chile. In what ways do Indigenous peoples in these nations seek to manage consultation and negotiation with powerful interests, gain development advantages, or to resist extraction processes? How have researchers collaborated for knowledge or development outcomes and how can such outcomes be improved?

We invite you to join us. Community thinkers, researchers and academics will deliver research papers and contribute to panel discussions that represent a diversity of responses to these questions.

Event is now full.
