The application process for entry into Higher Degree Research (HDR) in the School of Social Science involves a number of important steps. Becoming an HDR student in the School requires you to meet the entry requirements of the UQ Graduate School and also to gain the support of the School.

The School of Social Science (SoSS) only supports applications from candidates who clearly demonstrate the ability to complete a high-quality Higher Degree by Research. Obtaining School support is not an automatic process and requires that the applicant do more than simply meet minimum entry requirements. We recommend that applicants start the SoSS process 2-3 months before the UQ Graduate School’s deadlines for online applications. This will allow the applicant sufficient time to gather the relevant documentation and to prepare a research proposal, and the School sufficient time to review your application.

There are four steps to gaining support from the School of Social Science. Throughout this application process the applicant must send application materials only to the School’s HDR Liaison Officer (HLO) who will be your primary point of contact ( The HLO will liaise with, and assist, the applicant throughout the process.

2. Expression of Interest

Complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form and forward to the HLO at  This is a mandatory document in which you provide basic personal details in addition to a description of the proposed topic of your Higher Degree Research thesis. You will also need to identify your proposed Principal and Associate advisor(s). All applicants are required to have one Principal advisor, and at least one Associate advisor.  You will also be required to attach the following documents:

  • Certified academic transcripts
  • Full academic CV
  • Certified proof of Australian citizenship, New Zealand citizenship or Australian permanent/temporary residence (if applying as a domestic applicant)
  • Certified proof of meeting UQ’s English proficiency requirements
  • Academic writing sample of at least 2000 words

Please be aware that UQ HDR scholarships for tuition fee waivers and living allowances are highly competitive. An important aspect of a successful application is multiple peer-reviewed publications; ensure these are included in your Expression of Interest.

The HLO will forward your EOI and supporting documentation to the Postgraduate Studies Committee. If it is decided that the application meets UQ’s entry requirements, that SoSS can provide the appropriate advisory expertise and resources, and that the proposed advisory arrangements are appropriate, you will be invited to write a full research proposal and submit your application online.
