HDR Desk Space at the School of Social Science

The School of Social Science is committed to ensuring that HDR candidates have access to appropriate desk space to conduct their work from the School’s premises, should they wish to do so. To this end, the School has 57 desks available for HDR Student use, located in Levels 3 and 4 of the Michie Building (#9). Each of these desks comes with a desktop computer.

Any questions or concerns pertaining to HDR desk space can be directed at the School’s Director of Higher Degree by Research (DHDR), A/Prof Francisco Perales, at f.perales@uq.edu.au.

Existing Desk-Allocation Principles

The School has historically had more HDR candidates than it has HDR desks. For this reason, a series of desk-allocation guidelines have been operative for a number of years.

HDR students are allocated a single-occupancy desk if all of the following apply. The student:

  • self-reports that they require a desk within the School premises
  • is enrolled through the School of Social Science as full-time and non-remote
  • is not a staff member at the School and already has an office

When there is demand for desks, HDR students are asked to vacate their single-occupancy desk if any of the following applies. The student:

  • self-reports that they no longer require their desk
  • moves to part-time and/or remote status
  • goes on interruption for 3 months or longer
  • goes on fieldwork away from Brisbane for 3 months or longer
  • is awarded their degree
  • becomes a staff member at the School of Social Science and given an office

Please note that:

  • students who do not hold a desk can request one if their circumstances change according to the above parameters
  • students temporarily vacating a desk (e.g., to go on an interruption or fieldwork) are not guaranteed to occupy the same desk upon their return
  • where feasible, efforts are made to accommodate HDR students in the same floor as other students in their discipline and/or their Principal Advisor

Interim Desk-Space Measures

The desk-allocation policies and practices described above are in the process of being revised through consultation with HDR students and school staff. To meet urgent student need, two sets of interim measures are currently in practice.

Shared Desk Spaces

All desks that do not have a current occupant are designated and clearly labelled as “Shared Desk Spaces” and made available for ad hoc use by any HDR Students enrolled through the School of Social Science. All of our students are invited to use these desks, regardless of their enrolment status (FT or PT, remote or non-remote, on interruption or not).

At the moment, the following desks are available for this type of use:

  • Level 3, Desk #1
  • Level 3, Desk #9
  • Level 3, Desk #10
  • Level 3, Desk #11
  • Level 3, Desk #12

Students wishing to use the Shared Desk Spaces can simply occupy them at the desired day and time. Students are asked to leave these desks empty and clean when they finish using them. Disinfectant spray/wipes are provided by the School to this avail.

Flexible-Use Desks

Some HDR students who have been assigned a single-occupancy desk using the criteria above are happy for their space to be occupied by others in their absence (i.e., on those days or times of the day in which they do not attend campus). When this occurs, their desks are designated and clearly labelled as “Flexible-Use Desks”. All of our students are invited to use these desks, regardless of their enrolment status (FT or PT, remote or non-remote, on interruption or not).

At the moment, the following desks are available for this type of use:

  • Level 3, Desk #4 (assigned to Gary Moody)
  • Level 3, Desk #6 (assigned to Yunus Yigit)
  • Level 3, Desk #13 (assigned to Sarah Haggar)
  • Level 3, Desk #17 (assigned to Jason Kariwiga)
  • Level 3, Desk #20 (assigned to Rob Arcidiacono)
  • Level 3, Desk #22 (assigned to Joanna Horton)
  • Level 3, Desk #23 (assigned to Erin Mein)
  • Level 3, Desk #24 (assigned to Mai Giang)
  • Level 3, Desk #27 (assigned to Charlie Le Moyne)
  • Level 4 West side, Desk #1 (assigned to Abigail O'Hara)
  • Level 4 West side, Desk #2 (assigned to Pablo Aranda)
  • Level 4 West side, Desk #6 (assigned to Monique Lynn)
  • Level 4 West side, Desk #7 (assigned to Rose Ahearn)
  • Level 4 West side, Desk #8 (assigned to Rita Ting Lok)
  • Level 4 West side, Desk #9 (assigned to Zhaoxi Zheng)
  • Level 4 West side, Desk #10 (assigned to Marlyn Christine)
  • Level 4 West side, Desk #11 (assigned to Sara Mejia)

  • Level 4 West side, Desk #19 (assigned to Jojiana Cokanasiga)
  • Level 4 East side, Desk #3 (assigned to Dewi Sitompul)

Students wishing to use the Flexible-Use Desks can simply occupy them at the desired day and time, if free. Students are asked to leave these desks empty and clean when they finish using them. Disinfectant spray/wipes are provided by the School to this avail.
